On April 25, 2015, Nepal changed in less than a minute. A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake tore through the country, followed weeks later by a powerful aftershock on May 12. Homes collapsed. Roads cracked open. Entire villages that had stood for generations were reduced to rubble within moments. Thousands of lives were lost, and millions more were left without shelter, food, or any sense of safety.

In the days and weeks that followed, as the scale of the devastation became clear, Transformation Nepal mobilized to stand alongside the families whose lives had been shattered — not with promises, but with food, shelter, and hope, carried directly into the hardest-hit communities.
A Nation in Crisis
The earthquake and its aftershocks affected nearly every corner of central Nepal. Entire districts were left in ruins. Families who had lost their homes were sleeping in open fields under makeshift tarps, exposed to the elements, uncertain of what would come next. Basic necessities — food, clean water, shelter, sanitation — became urgent, life-or-death concerns for hundreds of thousands of people almost overnight.
For rural and marginalized communities already struggling before the disaster, the earthquake didn’t just destroy homes. It stripped away what little stability they had left.

Transformation Nepal’s Response
As the scale of the crisis unfolded, Transformation Nepal moved quickly to reach as many affected families as possible. Our relief efforts focused on the essentials — the things families needed most urgently to survive the days and weeks immediately after the disaster:
- Food distribution, delivering essential food supplies to families who had lost their homes, their stored grain, and their ability to cook or provide for themselves.
- Tarpaulins (tarps), providing emergency shelter material so families could protect themselves and their children from sun, rain, and the elements while their homes lay in ruins.
- Basic hygiene packages, distributing essential hygiene and sanitation supplies to help prevent the spread of illness and disease in the crowded, makeshift conditions so many families were forced into.

These relief efforts reached families across some of the districts hit hardest by the earthquake, including:
- Sindhupalchowk — one of the districts that suffered the most severe destruction and loss of life in the entire earthquake.
- Kavrepalanchowk, where entire villages were left without adequate shelter or supplies.
- Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, where dense populations and damaged infrastructure created urgent and widespread need.
- Lalitpur, where many families were displaced from homes that were no longer safe to live in.
- Ramechhap — Tin house built, giving displaced families a safer, more permanent shelter to rebuild their lives around.
In each of these areas, Transformation Nepal teams worked to reach families directly — bringing relief supplies into villages and neighborhoods where the need was greatest, often in difficult and uncertain conditions in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
Beyond Emergency Relief: Rebuilding in Ramechhap
Emergency relief meets the need of the moment. But Transformation Nepal recognized early on that recovery from a disaster of this scale would take more than food and tarps alone. Families needed a path back to safety and stability that would last well beyond the crisis itself.
In Ramechhap, that meant helping families rebuild with something more permanent than emergency shelter. Transformation Nepal supported the construction of tin roof houses for families whose homes had been destroyed — moving them out of tarps and temporary shelters and into safer, more durable housing that could withstand the seasons ahead.
For families in Ramechhap, a tin roof meant more than just shelter from the rain. It meant a measure of dignity restored, a safer place to raise their children, and one less thing to fear as the monsoon season approached. It was a tangible, lasting sign that recovery was possible — that the earthquake, as devastating as it was, did not have to be the end of the story.
Reaching Families in Their Darkest Hour
The scale of the 2015 earthquake meant that need vastly outpaced what any single organization could provide. But in villages across Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Ramechhap, Transformation Nepal’s teams worked to make sure that as many families as possible didn’t face that crisis entirely alone.
Food to eat when their stores were buried under rubble. Tarps to sleep under when their homes no longer stood. Hygiene supplies to protect their health when clean water and sanitation were suddenly scarce. And in Ramechhap, tin roofs to rebuild under when the time came to move from survival toward recovery.
Each of these efforts, small on their own, added up to something larger: a lifeline extended to communities in the moment they needed it most.

A Legacy Rooted in Compassion
The 2015 earthquake remains one of the most devastating disasters in Nepal’s modern history — a moment that tested the resilience of an entire nation. For Transformation Nepal, our response in the aftermath reflected the same philosophy that continues to guide our work today: that true transformation happens when people are met with both immediate compassion and a genuine commitment to long-term recovery.
The relief supplies delivered in those difficult weeks and months were never meant to be the end of our involvement — they were the beginning of relationships with communities that, in many cases, continue to this day. From emergency food and shelter in 2015 to the sustainable livelihood and agriculture projects we support now, our commitment to these families has never wavered.
